Abraham Lincoln rides through recently-fallen Richmond, Virginia, April 4, 1865, portrays the president’s triumphant visit to the fallen rebel capital. Throngs of former slaves and white Union sympathizers gave Lincoln a hero’s welcome while Confederate supporters remained indoors.
